Scanning Electron Microscope

A scanning electron microscope (SEM) (LEO 435 VP) uses electrons instead of light to create an image.  Because an electron has a much shorter wavelength than light in the visible region of the spectrum, higher magnifications can be obtained (up to 100,000 times with this microscope) than with a light microscope.  This allows observations of particles as small as several hunderd nanometers in diameter. In addition, X-rays produced from the sample can be detected (energy dispersive spectroscopy, EDS or EDX) to identify the elemental composition of the sample.
