Infrared Microspectrometer

The infrared microspectrometer uses a glo-bar source to produce radiation in the infra-red region of the electromagnetic spectrum.  Using apertures, the radiation is allowed to pass through a very specific region of a sample (as small as 10x10 micrometers).  The infra-red radiation interacts with the sample, allowing the microscopist to characterize the type of bonds present.  This technique is mainly used in the analysis of organic materials such as fibers, coatings and precipitate samples; however, micro-IR can also be used to study inorganic materials such as minerals.

This operation of the microscope, stage position and focusing are completely controlled and monitored by computer (not shown).
