Fluorescence Microscope

A fluorescence microscope (made by Olympus) uses an ultraviolet light source instead of visible light commonly used in light microscopes.  The ultraviolet radiation is absorbed by certain compounds, which reemit light in the visible wavelength in a process known as fluorescence.  A tool commonly used to examine biological material, the fluorescence microscope is also useful in particle analysis to identify the presence of optical brighteners, dyes and other organic materials that fluoresce.  The orange shield is in place to protect the microscopist from exposure to ultraviolet light reflected from the sample.
