Cathodoluminescence Microscopy

In cathodoluminescence microscopy, an electron beam is focused onto the sample.  In certain samples, the electron-sample interaction results in visible luminescence.  Luminescence in materials results from either the trace element content of a material or the nano-scale structure.  Shown above from left to right in cathodoluminescence: calcite and zircon (top), wollastonite and corrundum (bottom).  The grains in these images are on the order of 100 micrometers.
